Certificate of Pattern Making and Garment Construction - Part Time

Based on current industry methods, this course is for the student who wants hands on experience! If you would like to start your career as a designer, dressmaker, pattern maker, sample hand, machinist or want to start your own label, then this is the course for you!

The Certificate of Pattern making and Garment Construction course can be studied by beginners as well as those with some sewing and pattern making knowledge. The level of proficiency achieved will depend very much on the willingness of the student to learn and to complete the set tasks, requiring consistent application at home as well as in the classroom.

Course Content

  • Pattern making, grading and fitting according to recognised Australian Standard sizes.
  • Construction in calico of master patterns, prototypes, and samples of skirts, pants, shirts and jackets.
  • Conversion to fifth scale of all full scale patterns studied, to form a permanent reference manual.
  • Basic construction and sewing skills covering: darts, seams, waistbands, collars, cuffs, facings, pockets, buttons, buttonholes, zips, plackets, hems, linings, pads, sleeves.
  • Proficiency in the use of industrial sewing machines, and pattern making equipment.
  • Pressing techniques.

Assessment

  • Completion of set assignments on time and to the required standard.

Course Prerequisites

  • Year 12 preferred.
  • Access to sewing machine
  • Sufficient time at home for punctual completion of assigments and set tasks
